Songs the Lord Taught Us is the first album by the American psychobilly band The Cramps. It was released in May 1980 on . Records in America and Illegal Records in England. Lux Interior – vocals. Poison Ivy Rorschach – guitar. Bryan Gregory – guitar. Booker C – organ on "Fever". Alex Chilton – producer. John Hampton – engineer. Carl Grasso – art direction. The Cramps – sleeve concept, mixing. David Arnoff – photography.

The jacket reads "file under: sacred music," but only if one's definition includes the holy love of rockabilly sex-stomp, something which the Cramps fulfill in spades. Having spent Gravest Hits mostly doing revamps of older material, the foursome tackled a slew of originals like "The Mad Daddy" and "TV Set" this time around, creating one of the few neo-rockabilly records worthy of the name. Years later Songs still drips with threat and desire both, testament to both the band's worth and Chilton's just-right production.

Album · 1979 · 18 Songs. While critics tended to play up the band’s kitsch factor, Songs the Lord Taught Us is a highly personal work that grew out of Lux Interior and Ivy Rorschach’s formative experiences as teenage outcasts in Ohio and California

The Cramps got away with their Z-movie, zombie-rock schtick because they were so intense in their conviction that it had more value than middlebrow humanist pop. Descending on Memphis to cut their debut album with Big Star legend Alex Chilton, the band served up a thirteen-song punkabilly testament to drive-in anti-culture, replete with garage-band guitars and booming voodoo drums. Versions of "Fever" "Strychnine," and the Johnny Burnette Trio's "Tear It Up" competed with Lux Interior-Poison Ivy originals like ".  .
