Complete your Karita Mattila, Ilmo Ranta collection. Kuusi Laulua O. 8 "Kukkaislaulut" Song Cycle "Flower Songs", Op. 88 (9:01). 13. 1. Blåsippan The Blue Anemone.

Album · 1995 · 24 Songs. 5 Songs, Op. 37: No. 4. Var Det en Drom? (Was It a Dream?) By Josef Julius Wecksell, Johan Ludvig Runeberg & Jean Sibelius - Karita Mattila & Ilmo Ranta. 3. 6 Songs, Op. 36: No. 6. Demanten Pa Marssnon (The Diamond On the March Snow). By Josef Julius Wecksell & Jean Sibelius - Karita Mattila & Ilmo Ranta.

Karita Mattila 's large, focused, warmly expressive soprano is especially well suited to the music of the Romantic and post-Romantic eras, so it seems natural that she would have an affinity for the vocal music of her countryman Jean Sibelius, whose songs are among his most passionate compositions. Sibelius was a prolific song composer, but his production of vocal solos petered out in the 1920s, around the same time he wrote his last symphony, not long before he virtually ceased producing new works  . Pianist Ilmo Ranta supplies a supportive accompaniment. Ondine's sound is clear, clean, and vibrant.

Karita Marjatta Mattila (pronounced ) (born 5 September 1960) is a Finnish operatic soprano. Mattila appears regularly in the major opera houses worldwide, including the Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Opera House in London, Théâtre du Châtelet, Opéra Bastille, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Francisco Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Vienna State Opera, Toronto Roy Thomson Hall, and Großes Festspielhaus in Salzburg. She then continued her studies with Vera Rozsa in London Wild Rose (Ondine) with Ilmo Ranta.

The radiant Karita Mattila, the Finnish soprano, gives an idiomatic performance and is ably supported by Sakari Oramo during his tenure with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Wonder of wonders, the CD comes with notes and translations! Very highly recommended. And double that praise for Sibelius' orchestral songs (which never have their full impact scaled down to piano accompaniment). As Birgit Nilsson ably demonstrated in her 1965 Sibelius/Rangström spectacular (Decca), these utterances demand a larger voice, a larger orchestral soundstage and a dauntless conductor.
