Detroit's Tribe Records was a political, social, and aesthetic collective of local musicians whose collective identity was a staggering array of aesthetic ones - especially in music. The group headed by Wendell Harrison and Phil Ranelin also held in its ranks Marcus Belgrave and the late Harold McKinney, with countless others, such as bassist Ron Brooks, trumpeter Charles Moore, drummer Doug Hammond, and others joining in for sessions and concerts

The efforts of Tribe, Strata East, Chicago's AACM, and St. Louis' BAG form a difficult episode of jazz history; difficult, because these musicians' creative and entrepreneurial energy, confronting impossible economic odds, met ultimately with failure. This compilation convincingly establishes that the Tribe Records experiment was an important, if too-often overlooked, part of the story

This is a labal comp, Tribe records, and is stuffed with jazz and funk. All the music ranges from very good to outragiously excelent. Check out, for example, "What We Need," a fantastic vocal track with a dark blues ballad base. 4 people found this helpful.

Best record to do, you know, that little green thing...

Little green thing? Mow the lawn? Play with alien dicks? Pick your nose? I am stumped. Damn good record featuring a storied label all the same.
