Why did Bach compose his B minor Mass: as an application for a better paying job, or as the summa sine qua non of his religious art? When did Bach compose his B minor Mass: in his late forties at the high summer of life, or in his early sixties in the darkening winter of life? What is the B minor Mass: a collection of choruses and arias, of stile antico fugues and stile gallant songs that Bach himself plundered and parodied from his earlier works, or is it Bach's greatest, and possibly music's greatest, work dedicated to the glory of God?

The Face Of Bach wrote (August 30, 2000): < Lof3 wrote: Makes me wonder about musicians trying to perform a Karajan-style B Minor Mass in a hundred years time on authentic/period 20th Century instruments!? And, at least, they will have four different recordings by the great HvK (two commercial, two concert ) to use for a reference.

Under Herbert von Karajan the Berliner Philharmoniker developed their very own performance culture, characterised by a beauty of sound, enchanting legati, virtuosity and perfection. He preferred to concentrate on the classical-romantic repertoire: Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner, Schumann, Tchaikovsky, Wagner and Strauss. In addition, he devoted himself to the Second Viennese School and leading composers of the early 20th century like Ravel, Stravinsky and Debussy, taking occasional excursions into the contemporary era with works by Messiaen and Henze, even Penderecki.
